“A scratchboard is similar to a
word engraving like GUSTAVE DORE illustration or steel engraving
like ALBRECHT DURER. The only difference is that it is an original
and reproductions can not be made as with a steel engraving
or wood engraving. The detail is probably finer than the steel
or wood. On a white board coated with white clay, the surface
is coated with black ink and with a very sharp point the drawing
is engraved. Then I varnish the finishing drawing and it becomes
very durable without glass”
-Eyvind Earle, 1999
